Big Sur, slow on purpose

Most people treat Highway 1 like a commute with a view. This trip treats it like the destination. Three days, one stretch of coast, and enough slack in the schedule that a closed road or a long lunch does not ruin the chat.

Spring or fall 90 miles of coast

Day 1

Monterey to Pfeiffer

Leave Monterey after breakfast, not at dawn. Stop at Bixby Bridge for the photo everyone expects, then keep going. Point Lobos if the lot is open; skip it if the line is a parade. Check into a cabin or camp near Pfeiffer Big Sur, walk the river path before dinner, and eat somewhere with a deck. The first night should feel like you arrived, not like you survived a drive.

Day 2

One hike, one long table

Pick a single trail and do it properly: Pfeiffer Falls, Buzzards Roost, or the bluff at Andrew Molera. Afternoon is for McWay Falls from the overlook only — do not scramble the closed beach. Late lunch at Nepenthe or a picnic you packed. The point of day two is that nobody asks “what’s next?” for at least three hours.

Day 3

Elephant seals, then decide

Roll south toward Piedras Blancas if the road is open. The seal rookery is louder and weirder than the photos. Hearst Castle is optional and crowded; the coastline back north is not. If a slide has the highway cut, turn it into a loop through the valley and call it part of the story. Big Sur always has a story.
